DESCRIPTION GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The SELA Youth Organizer is responsible for expanding CBE’s youth membership base in South East LA (SELA) high schools by supporting and outreaching for the on-campus “Youth Action!” clubs sponsored by CBE. The Youth Organizer is expected to develop and maintain liaisons with grassroots leaders and allies; conduct educational outreach; advance leadership and membership development; and lead grassroots campaigns. The Youth Organizer will be primarily focused on Clean Transportation and Energy; local SELA and statewide environmental justice issues; the “cumulative impacts” of goods movement, air pollution and contamination of soil; investment in green space and EJ Advocacy work locally and in Sacramento, as well as maintaining the youth program at large.

 

This position supports and builds power of the youth program through our transformative organizing model. The SELA Youth Organizer will work closely with the other Youth Organizers to develop and implement educational outreach and recruitment, developing meaningful relationships with members, representing the organization in coalition spaces, and advancing leadership and membership development.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES for this position include, but are not limited to

  • Help develop, implement, and participate in key campaigns and coalition activities that integrate CBE’s tools of transformative organizing, scientific and policy research, legal and civic engagement strategies.
  • Coordinate multiple high school campus organizing chapters through coordination with campus faculty, educators and student body.
  • Lead grassroots campaign planning & strategizing.
  • Oversee SELA youth/community interns.
  • Manage program budgets.
  • Coordinate weekly campus club meetings and hybrid core member meetings.
  • Lead outreach to low-income SELA youth and residents at large.
  • Ensure consistent communication between CBE youth programs throughout CBE communities.
  • Coordinate intergenerational efforts between members who are youth, adult and elders.
  • Build and coordinate strong relationships with local and regional alliances and partners.
  • Help develop the leadership skills of CBE members through bridging efforts between CBE members and our allies.
  • Develop creative, community-friendly curriculum.
  • Develop and implement dynamic communications materials that showcase youth and elevate our environmental justice framework.
  • Provide reporting to the SoCal Program Director.
  • Participate in weekly SELA Team meetings & monthly State-Wide Staff Meetings.

 

In addition to the above, racial equity and language justice are key areas supported by the SELA Youth Organizer. CBE has made a commitment to addressing anti-blackness and white supremacy culture within our organization, and the SELA Youth Organizer?will participate in CBE’s internal work to meet equity goals and will be a bridge to our members’ participation.

EXPERIENCE & JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires previous organizing experience in grassroots communities, labor, and/or community organizing.
  • Campaign planning experience.
  • Solid understanding of environmental justice and commitment to long-term social change, through community organizing.
  • Public speaking/presentation experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license, driver’s insurance and access to a reliable vehicle preferred.

 

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, overtime-exempt position, with an annual salary of $70,762. CBE offers a comprehensive benefits package including a generous vacation and leave policy; fully-paid premiums for medical, vision, and dental insurance; an additional mental health benefit; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a flexible spending plan. CBE pays full premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and any dependents.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience related to the environmental justice movement, social justice, public interest, civil rights, community organizing, scientific training, and/or a personal history with communities highly impacted by pollution.
